Description
At the back of your throat, two masses of tissue called tonsils act as filters, trapping germs that could otherwise enter your airways and cause infection. They also produce antibodies to fight infection. But sometimes the tonsils themselves become infected. A common indication could be a Streptococcus (strep) irritation. Tonsillitis EBV usually may be caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is most often seen in teens and young children. Children can get the virus, but it often goes unnoticed because their symptoms are mild. Older adults usually don’t get Tonsillitis EBV, because they have better immunity to the virus. Tonsillitis EBV is contagious and may cause the following complications:
- Epstein-Barr
- Meningitis
- Swollen tonsils — which can block breathing
- Inflammation
- Painful throat
- Loss of appetite
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
